Gaffer's high-praise for fantastic staff who helped save supporter's life

19 March 2017

Stags' boss Steve Evans today commended the life-saving work and diligence of three of the club's staff, who helped save a supporter's life prior to our 2-0 win at home to Carlisle United.

It is understood that a male Stags' supporter was walking to One Call Stadium in front of the Quarry Lane Stand before collapsing suddenly at around 1.15pm yesterday afternoon.

Assistant groundsman Scott Merriman (pictured, right) witnessed the collapse of the gentleman, before rushing to place him in the recovery position and then raised the alarm with the club's medical department.

Physiotherapist Dan Kett and sports therapist Lizzie Reed performed medical attention to the gentleman before the emergency services arrived.

The Stags' supporter is said to now be in a 'stable condition in hospital', the club are pleased to learn.

And this afternoon, Mansfield Town manager Steve Evans said:  "On behalf of everyone at Mansfield Town Football Club, I would like to congratulate our physiotherapist Dan Kett and sports therapist Lizzie Reed for their swift actions and medical care in helping save the life of the Stags' supporter, as he took ill yesterday afternoon prior to the match.

"Additionally, Scott Merriman, the assistant groundsman, deserves huge credit for his speediness of thought and aid to the gentleman concerned.

"The actions from the paramedics was most impressive and it is good to know we are in the company of some great people who can, and do, save lives.

"I have always said that we are Team Mansfield and our togetherness is like a light on a dreary dark night.

"After the match, everyone wanted to learn of the gentleman's welfare and it was fantastic to hear the news that he is in a stable condition in hospital.

"Our thoughts are with his family, who hopefully can witness the gentleman make a full recovery.

"When things happen like they did ahead of the match yesterday, the expertise of the medical staff kicks-in and like the match, teamwork prevailed," added the gaffer.
